MIGRANT/FARMWORKER HEALTH
A Migrant Health Specialist coordinates and supports Farmworker and Latino health services and activities among member M/CHCs across the state. Other state-wide initiatives that benefit migrant/farmworker and Latino families are sponsored or supported by the NCCHCA. In addition, a Migrant Health Coordinator works in an 8-state region (DE, KY, MD, NC, SC, TN, VA, WV) to support development of services to farmworkers and their families, and to foster continuity
of care for this mobile population.
East Coast Migrant Stream Forum
The East Coast Migrant Stream Forum, begun by NCCHCA in 1988, is an annual conference that focuses on issues related to the health and well-being of migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families living and working along the East Coast.
Through educational sessions, roundtable discussions, and networking opportunities, the Forum offers farmworker health professionals a chance to explore new ideas, discover innovative strategies, and gain relevant training that contributes to improving health care delivery for this hard-to-reach, undeserved population.
Annual Meeting
The NC Farmworker Health Alliance Annual Meeting is held at the height of the growing season. It is an opportunity for farmworkers and farmworker health providers to come together to discuss selected health issues affecting the farmworker community and to identify possible prevention strategies. During the meeting, awards are given recognizing outstanding service in farmworker health throughout North Carolina.
The NC Farmworker Health Alliance Library
The NC Farmworker Health Alliance Library is a collection of currently available literature on topics relating to farmworker health. Materials include health education pamphlets, books, videos, manuals, research papers (published and unpublished), and national and state resources. The library is intended to support individuals or organizations who are helping to improve the health of farmworkers and their families.
Individuals interested in reviewing or borrowing materials may visit the library at the NCCHCA Office. All visits are by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, please call: 919-297-0066 or 919-297-0014.
Portable Health Records Project
The Portable Health Records Project aims to assure better continuity of care for migrant farmworkers and their families. Migrant farmworkers often move back and forth from other countries, and usually travel within several states, so they sometimes receive health care at various clinics.
Essential information, like medication allergies, as well as immunization history, past screening or treatment for tuberculosis, and previous treatment for chronic disease can be documented in the passport-sized record. The Portable Health Record is bilingual in English and Spanish. If you are interested in participating in the project, or would like more detail, please contact Stephanie Triantafillou at 919-297-0014 or email her at triantafillous@ncphca.org.
