WDN Drops the Ball

Okay, here I was, just about to email Jonathan re: today’s CAFTA story and tell him what a fine job he did writing that article — and an email from a friend in Raleigh arrives as I’m typing. WOW, did the Washington Daily News ever miss a BIG story. Man-oh-man. Tranter’s Creek camper accused of embezzling over $1,000,000.

The Arrest of Carol Dail Finch in Tranter’s Creek Campground!

The first arrest was made Monday in an investigation into how employees might have defrauded the Wake school system of more than $2 million to buy items such as personal watercraft, campers and wide-screen televisions.

Carol Dail Finch, 42, of Tranter’s Creek Campground at 6573 Clark’s Neck Road in Washington, N.C., was arrested by the State Bureau of Investigation on a charge of obtaining property by false pretenses, a felony. She is accused of stealing more than $1 million and is being held at the Wake County jail with bail set at $1 million.

Finch, who used to live in Johnston County, was the former budget and technology analyst for the school transportation department. Her attorney, Jack O’Hale, did not immediately return calls Monday evening.

Our Philosophy:

I believe that religion, generally speaking, has been a curse to mankind - that its modest and greatly overestimated services on the ethical side have been more than overcome by the damage it has done to clear and honest thinking. I believe that no discovery of fact, however trivial, can be wholly useless to the race, and that no trumpeting of falsehood, however virtuous in intent, can be anything but vicious. I believe that all government is evil, in that all government must necessarily make war upon liberty... I believe that the evidence for immortality is no better than the evidence of witches, and deserves no more respect. I believe in the complete freedom of thought and speech... I believe in the capacity of man to conquer his world, and to find out what it is made of, and how it is run. I believe in the reality of progress. I - But the whole thing, after all, may be put very simply. I believe that it is better to tell the truth than to lie. I believe that it is better to be free than to be a slave. And I believe that it is better to know than be ignorant. **HL Mencken
